Genesis 3:15 (ESV)

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

Talk About It

From the very start of God's big story, people chose to disobey God, and brokenness entered the world. Adam and Eve tried to hide from God, but God came looking for them. Even though they had sinned, God didn't leave them alone. Instead, He made an important promise. In Genesis 3:15, God speaks to the serpent (who tricked them) and says that one day someone from Eve's family would defeat evil, even though it would hurt. This is called the “first gospel”—the first time God promises to rescue people from sin. This verse reminds us that God made a promise long ago, and He kept it by sending Jesus! For many, many years, God's people had to wait, but they could trust that God would do what He said. Even though waiting is hard, Advent is a special time to remember that God always keeps His promises. We can trust Him when we wait, too, because He is always faithful.

For Parents to Explain

Dear God, thank You for keeping Your promises and sending Jesus. Help us trust You while we wait for Your answers in our lives. Amen.

Family Activities

Waiting Game

  1. Sit together and pick a favorite treat (like cookies or fruit) and set it in sight.
  2. Set a timer for five minutes and wait together before eating it—no distractions!
  3. While waiting, talk about how it feels and what helps you wait.
  4. After the timer, enjoy the treat and thank God for helping you wait and trust Him.

Promise Chain

  1. Cut colored paper into strips and write a promise of God from the Bible—or write 'God keeps His promises.'
  2. Link the strips together to make a paper chain.
  3. Hang the chain where you can see it this week.
  4. Each day, pick a link and thank God for being a promise-keeper.

Family Prayer

Now, take turns telling God something you are waiting for, and ask Him to help you trust His promises.
