Learning to Wait Well – Trust as a Spiritual Discipline

The first words God speaks after humanity’s rebellion are not words of rebuke, but a question: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9). Even in the midst of failure and hiding, God initiates relationship, calling Adam and Eve back from their shame. God's question is not to inform Himself—He already knows all things. Rather, it extends an invitation for confession, honesty, and restored fellowship. This sets a pattern: God’s people are called to walk with Him, even as they wait for full redemption. Advent is a reminder that waiting, while difficult, is a spiritual discipline. Our culture prefers distraction, but God calls us to lean in with trust. As God seeks His people in their hiding, so He seeks us in our own seasons of waiting. True waiting is not passive—it is an opportunity to answer God’s call, returning to Him with faith and openness. In every season of delay or uncertainty, our response to His voice shapes our experience of His grace.

Key Takeaway

Waiting well means answering God’s call—trusting that He meets us in our hiddenness.

Questions to Consider

  1. When you find yourself waiting, are you tempted to hide from God or turn toward Him?
  2. What spiritual practices help you sense God's presence in uncertain times?
  3. How might God be inviting you to trust Him more deeply right now?
